The Third Sturge Pilgrimage

About ten years ago Betty and I were lunching with the late Philip Sturge at the old “Fish Inn” at Wicksford in Warwickshire - where Joseph VI had changed the counterfeit six-pence that had so preyed on his conscience. Discussing the enjoyable family gathering that had taken place in 1980, which repeated one held exactly fifty years previously, we were all agreed that it would be rather a long time until the next family re-union. Philip, who had held the bust of Joseph in the 1930 photograph, very sensibly questioned why we should wait a further fifty years. The outcome of that conversation was a decision to do it again, after twenty-five years. And so the planning began.

That date is now just two years away and this letter, with the enclosed information sheet, is intended to introduce the draft plan for the Third Sturge Pilgrimage on Saturday 23rd July 2005. Those who attended before will recognise much that is familiar in the proposed programme but subsequent research has identified additional home sites and historical information. Much of this information is beginning to be shared on our new family history website, at www.sturgefamily.com. All members of the family are encouraged to visit and contribute to this site, which includes a growing souvenir of the 1980 event.

The final details of our gathering will be confirmed next year and, if you would like to have further information about the 2005 gathering sent to you nearer to the date, please write back to confirm your interest. Should you know of other family members who might be interested, please pass a copy of the enclosed invitation to them.
